What Else You Need To Know |
|
|
- Canvas and Placement Exams: By now, all incoming students have been invited to join the Emory Essentials Oxford Edition Canvas course. You can log in to Canvas with your NetID and password here.
Please read the information in the Emory Essentials Oxford Edition Canvas course very closely. The Academics Module includes important information about academics at Oxford (including the general education program), guidance to prepare for class registration (taking place in August!), information about placement exams, and suggestions to help you plan for your first semester of study at Oxford.
Speaking of placement exams, students need to make sure they complete all relevant placement exams by the August 1 priority deadline.
NOTE: Only take the placement exams relevant to your intended course of study. For example, if you do not plan to study Spanish during your time at Oxford, you are not required to take that placement exam. August 1 is the priority deadline for placement exams. If you do not complete them by that time, you may have difficulty signing up for classes during class registration, which begins on August 12. Don't wait until the last minute to take these exams (as some take time to complete).
If you have questions about placement exams or content in the Canvas course, please contact the Advising Support Center at oxadvising@emory.edu.

- Academic Advising, Pre-Registration Programming, & Peer Advising Network (PAN): As an incentive to log in to the Emory Essentials Oxford Edition Canvas course, once students complete the Academics Modules, they are eligible to connect with the Advising Support Center in one of two ways: large course planning sessions and individual appointments.
- Large Group Course Planning Sessions: It is recommended to attend a large course planning session before scheduling an individual advising appointment. The Advising Support Center is hosting large course planning sessions throughout the month of July and first week of August. These sessions will cover logistics to navigate course registration, including using resources like Course Atlas and OPUS, and provide some general recommendations to help you prepare for class registration (taking place August 12-14). Detailed schedule for these group sessions is posted in Canvas.
- Individual Appointments: If you have still questions after attending a large course planning session, you can schedule an individual virtual academic advising appointment with the ASC. Individual academic advising appointments are first-come, first-serve and available through Emory Navigate (see instructions below). We are limiting individual appointments to ONE per student, so that we can meet with as many first-year students as possible. Alternatively, students are always welcome to email questions to the ASC department directly at oxadvising@emory.edu.
To use Navigate:
1. Access Emory Navigate via the desktop website or download the app
2. Click “Schedule an Appointment Today!” near the top right
3. Select “Academic Advising>Oxford College First Year Advising Appointment”
4. Select your date/time with your assigned advisor
Please note, before you schedule an appointment:
Make sure that you have thoroughly reviewed the material in the Academics Module.
Have one or two possible fall schedules ready for review.
Make sure you know what is required of your major if you have one.
Make sure to write down any questions you have so you don't forget. Students are allowed to schedule ONE advising appointment for the summer, so be prepared!
- Peer Advising Network (PAN) Programs: Students can also attend programs hosted by the ASC’s Peer Advising Network (PAN) team. The Peer Advisors are rising sophomore students who want to help incoming students navigate their transition to Oxford College. To learn more about the PAN team's upcoming events, visit the “Advising Support Center Peer Advising Network (PAN)” page in Canvas. The PAN team is also promoting programs through the ASC’s Instagram and other social media platforms. The ASC will be hosting virtual open hours during registration in August.

- Recruiting for Community Engagement Opportunities: The Office of Student Involvement, Leadership, & Transitions has many ways for first year students to engage with the Oxford and wider Newton County community. Megan Hulgan (mhulgan@emory.edu, Oxford Student Center Rm 202) will be your contact for Volunteer Oxford, Oxford Service Leaders, Emory Reads, Ox Votes, and Community Engaged Learning. Check out a list of our community partners here and save the date for opportunities to plug in here!
We have student employment opportunities with Oxford Service Leaders and Emory Reads, and both programs will be recruiting first year students when you arrive on campus! Both OSL and Emory Reads programs are hourly paid positions.
OSL students are matched with one community partner for the year that aligns with the student’s advocacy interests. They work on-site with their partner 5-10 hours a week, and transportation is provided by Oxford College. To request information about Oxford Service Leaders, please complete this interest form.
Emory Reads is a program at both Oxford and Emory Colleges in which student workers mentor and tutor public school elementary and middle school students in Reading and Math. Emory Reads students must be federal work study eligible. Transportation is provided to the schools, and students may choose multiple 3-hour shifts that fit their schedule.
