What Else You Need To Know |
- Emory Essentials: By now, all incoming first year students have received an invitation to join the Emory Essentials: Oxford Edition Canvas course. Please be sure your student checks their Emory email and accepts this invitation.
The course features interactive modules that include information about Academic Life at Oxford, Placement Testing, Overviews of the General Education Program, Resources for Class Registration, Campus Life, and more! Additional information about summer information sessions, academic advising webinars, and programs from the Peer Advising Network will be announced throughout the summer. Have your student check out the canvas course regularly for updates! |

- Ignite Oxford Pre-Orientation: If your student is ready to set in motion their own “OX-perience,” have them join us at Ignite Oxford Pre-Orientation this August 19-22, 2024! Ignite Oxford is an immersive 4-day, 3-night optional experience dedicated to building community and belonging among incoming students. The program aims to help students acclimate to Oxford College prior to the start of New Student Orientation.
At Ignite Oxford, students will:
-
Gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be an Oxford student
-
Learn about Oxford traditions and student life from upper class mentors
-
Build relationships and establish a network of support
-
And much more!
- Department for Accessibility Services: The Department for Accessibility Services (DAS) provides accommodations for students with diagnosed disabilities. Students are responsible for initiating the accommodation request process by self-disclosing their disability directly to the DAS office.
It is suggested that students submit housing accommodation requests by June 1 in order to meet housing deadlines. If needed, please have your student submit their academic accommodation requests by August 1 to ensure time to put their accommodation plan in place prior to the first day of class.
If you are interested in learning more about the Oxford College DAS office and its available resources, please visit the department's website. If you have any questions, please feel free to email DAS at accessibility@emory.edu with "Oxford Student" in the subject line. |
- Required Health Forms & Health Insurance Waiver: There is one Emory Student Health Portal for students to complete their health requirement forms and upload their immunization records. Students must complete all requirements by July 1 per the instructions on the Student Health Portal.
All students are also required to have health insurance. If your student wishes to waive out of the Emory University Student Health Insurance Plan, please have them complete the required online Health Insurance Waiver through their OPUS account by August 1. Please allow 5-7 business days for the verification process to conclude.
If you need more information about insurance requirements, please visit our website.
For more information or questions, please visit the Student Health Services page of the Welcome Website.

- Discovery Seminars: Every first-year student will enroll in a Discovery Seminar (DSC 101) course as the first step in Oxford's signature general education curriculum focused on Discovery, Exploration, and Reflection. Now is the time for to start thinking about their Discovery Seminar for the fall!
The 3-credit Discovery Seminars are offered on a wide range of course topics and allow students to engage in inquiry-based learning with a faculty mentor, who will also serve as their academic adviser, and a small group of other first-year students. See descriptions of the 29 Discovery Seminars and have your student submit their preferences here.
Be sure to have your student submit their preference form to rank their top choices of Discovery Seminars by July 15. Students who do not submit their preferences by the July 15 deadline will be randomly assigned to a DSC 101 course with open seats. |
- Placement Testing: Oxford College requires entering first-year students to complete placement exams for specific courses. These courses include First-Year Writing, World Languages, Mathematics, and others. These courses open in Canvas on June 1. We want to make sure our students enroll in the right level of instruction to ensure their first year on campus is as successful as possible.
The priority deadline for most placement exams is August 1. If your student intends to enroll in a course that requires placement for Fall 2024, please have them complete their exams by this deadline.
Visit the Placement Testing page of the Welcome Website for more information about these exams, their locations, and how to access them. More information about placement exams can also be accessed in the Emory Essentials Oxford Edition Canvas course.
If you have questions, you can email the Advising Support Center at oxadvising@emory.edu.

- Move-In Day & New Student Orientation: We are looking forward to welcoming your student to our campus on Friday, August 23! Below is an overview of what you can expect on Move-In Day:
We have a special program for all our families and guests on August 23, which will conclude just before dinnertime. At that point, we ask family members to depart campus and allow their students to fully engage in the rest of the program, which will last through the first day of classes, on Wednesday, August 28. More information regarding move-in day logistics and a fully updated version of the entire New Student Orientation schedule will be provided later this summer.
Please contact oxfordorientation@emory.edu with questions.

- F1 Visas: Will your student be studying at Oxford with an F1 international student visa? If so, they will need to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee before they can apply for an F1 visa. Learn more about paying the fee on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website. Be sure to have your student attach a copy of the receipt of payment to their I-20 so that they can show proof of payment when they enter the U.S. port of entry.
